The Art of Candle Care | How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

There's something wonderfully comforting about lighting a candle. Whether it's the gentle glow on a quiet evening, a favourite fragrance filling the room, or the finishing touch to a beautifully laid table, candles have a lovely way of making everyday moments feel special.

At Thistle & King, we believe that beautiful things deserve to be enjoyed and cared for. And with just a few simple habits, you can help your favourite candles burn more evenly, last longer and look their best.

Here are our favourite candle-care tips.

1. A Little Trim Goes a Long Way

Before each burn, trim your candle wick to approximately 5 mm.

A shorter wick helps encourage a steady flame, reduces excessive smoking and prevents the black soot that can sometimes gather around candle containers.

A dedicated wick trimmer is lovely to have, but a small pair of scissors will do the job just as well.

2. Make the First Burn Count

The first time you light a candle is particularly important.

For candles in containers, allow the melted wax to reach close to the edges before extinguishing the flame, where the manufacturer's instructions permit.

This helps prevent tunnelling — when the candle burns down through the centre, leaving a ring of unused wax around the sides.

Patience really is a virtue when it comes to candles!

3. Find the Perfect Spot

Candles love a calm environment.

Keep yours away from open windows, fans and draughts, which can cause the flame to flicker, burn unevenly or produce soot.

Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, well away from curtains, flowers and anything flammable.

And, of course, never leave a burning candle unattended.

4. Know When to Say Goodnight

As tempting as it is to leave a beautiful candle burning all evening, longer isn't always better.

Follow the manufacturer's recommended burn time. For many container candles, this is no more than three to four hours at a time.

Allow the wax to cool and solidify completely before relighting.

A little restraint helps preserve your candle for many more lovely evenings.

5. Keep Your Candle Looking Beautiful

Once your candle has cooled, gently remove any loose wick trimmings or debris from the wax.

Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can soften wax, fade colours and affect fragrance over time.

A little care goes a surprisingly long way.

6. Enjoy Every Last Moment — Safely

Knowing when to stop burning a candle is just as important as knowing how to care for it.

For container candles, stop using them when approximately 1 cm of wax remains, or sooner if directed by the manufacturer.

Never burn a candle right down to the bottom of its container.

The Beauty of a Simple Ritual

Sometimes it's the smallest rituals that bring the greatest pleasure.

A candle glowing beside a favourite book. A softly lit dinner with friends. A quiet moment at the end of a busy day.

With a little care, your candles can be part of many more of those moments.
