A Thistle, a King Protea and a Little Shop in the Winelands

The story behind Thistle & King
Some journeys take us further than we ever imagined. Mine began in Scotland and eventually led me to a little shop in the beautiful town of Robertson, in the heart of South Africa's Winelands.
And somewhere along the way, Thistle & King was born.

A Love of Beautiful Things
I was born in Scotland and spent much of my working life in luxury retail, particularly in the world of fine jewellery.
One of the highlights of my career was working as Customer Service Manager for Hamilton & Inches, the prestigious Jeweller in Edinburgh.
It was an environment where quality, craftsmanship, attention to detail and exceptional service were part of everyday life. Those years shaped the way I think about retail, and the values I still hold dear today.
I've always believed that shopping should be about more than simply buying something.
It's about the pleasure of discovering something beautiful, the excitement of finding just the right gift, and the feeling of being genuinely welcomed and looked after.
And, of course, there's the joy of finding something a little different.
I've always loved sourcing unusual, beautifully made pieces that I truly believe in. Things with character, quality and a story to tell.

From Scotland to South Africa
In 2010, life brought me to South Africa, a country that would gradually become every bit as much home as Scotland.
In 2015, I took a rather exciting leap of faith and bought Chelsea House, the lovely retail store where I had been working in the heart of Somerset West.
Owning my own shop gave me the freedom to bring together everything I loved about retail: beautiful products, thoughtful gifting and, most importantly, personal service.
I loved building relationships with customers, discovering new suppliers and creating a shop that people genuinely enjoyed visiting.
But as the years passed, I began to dream of something a little different.

A Change of Pace
By 2024, I found myself longing for a slower, more peaceful way of life.
Somewhere with open spaces, beautiful scenery and the opportunity to spend more time outdoors, hiking, cycling and enjoying nature.
I've always been happiest enjoying life's simple pleasures. A beautiful walk, time spent with my dogs, or an afternoon in the kitchen preparing something delicious.
I love cooking, particularly the pleasure of bringing people together around a table. For me, there's something wonderful about good food, relaxed conversation and making people feel at home.
And then there are my dogs, who bring endless companionship, character and a little chaos to everyday life. Long walks and outdoor adventures are all the better with four-legged company.
The charming town of Robertson, surrounded by mountains, vineyards and wide-open landscapes, felt like just the place to embrace more of these moments.

It was time for a new chapter, both personally and professionally.
And with that new chapter came the opportunity to give my business a new identity. Something more meaningful. Something that reflected not just what I sold, but who I am.
Why Thistle & King?
The name Thistle & King is very close to my heart.
The thistle, the national flower of Scotland, represents my roots, my heritage and the country where my story began.
The king protea, South Africa's national flower, represents the country that welcomed me and became my second home.
Together, they are my little tribute to two very special places I have been fortunate enough to call home.
Two countries, two beautiful flowers, and one rather personal story.

More Than Just a Shop
Today, Thistle & King is a reflection of everything I've come to love about retail, but also a little of the things I love about life.
A thoughtfully chosen collection of gifts, homeware, clothing, jewellery and lovely little discoveries, each selected because I believe it deserves a place on our shelves.
My love of cooking and entertaining naturally draws me towards beautiful, practical things for the home. Pieces that make everyday rituals feel a little more special, whether it's setting a table, preparing a meal or welcoming friends for a relaxed evening.
I'm not interested in filling a shop simply for the sake of filling it. I'd much rather find something special, something beautifully made, something that makes you smile or inspires you to pick it up for a closer look.
And while the products are important, the experience of visiting us matters just as much.
I want Thistle & King to be the sort of shop where you feel welcome to wander, browse, chat and perhaps discover something you didn't even know you were looking for.
A little shop with a personal touch, where quality matters and good old-fashioned customer service will never go out of style.

A Little Piece of Both Worlds
When I look at Thistle & King today, I see so much more than a business.
I see the journey from Edinburgh to South Africa, the people I've met along the way, the lessons I've learned and the wonderful opportunity to create something that feels genuinely my own.
These days, when I'm not in the shop, you'll most likely find me enjoying the outdoors, spending time with my dogs, out cycling or happily pottering about in the kitchen.
It's a life that feels a little closer to nature and a little more connected to the things that really matter.
And perhaps that's what makes this little shop so special to me.
It carries a little piece of Scotland, a great deal of South African sunshine, and a lifetime's love of beautiful things.
If you ever find yourself in Robertson, I do hope you'll pop in and say hello.
I'd love to welcome you.
With love,
Carol x
